I just wanted to share a few tips and settings in Zoom that could be useful to teachers/admin.
Tip #1 Auto Mute on Joining
Nobody enjoys the accidental background noise that can interrupt whoever is currently speaking. Even worse is when there's feedback from an open mic. Mute is our friend. If you want to automatically join meetings muted so you don't have to worry about you being the unknowing culprit here's what you'll want to do (on PC)
First click the cog in the upper right of the meeting client, and then go to Audio Settings
Then you'll simply click the box next to "Mute my microphone when joining a meeting".
Tip #2 Mute Participants on Entry
When you're hosting a meeting, especially for a large group, you can't always rely on everyone following Tip #1 and you may want to go ahead and force participants to join muted. This can actually be enabled from within a meeting, but must be redone each time you create a new meeting. Changing this setting as shown below makes it the default for all new meetings you create.
For this you will need to access the account settings on the Zoom website. If you're already logged in, you will need to proceed to the "My Account" menu in the upper right.
After logging in or clicking "My Account", you will click "Personal > Settings" on the left side menu.
Scroll down a short ways and you'll find this setting.
Tip #3 Personal ID Waiting Room
If you wish to use your personal meeting ID to set up a persistent "office hours" meeting, this may be the setting for you. This will let you manually pick and choose individual participants or small groups who have joined to interact with you privately. Everyone else who is in the waiting room will not hear any audio or see any video until you manually bring them in. They're just... waiting.
For this you will want to go ahead and download and install the Zoom Client for Meetings. Once installed and logged in, click the dropdown arrow next to New Meeting, and you will be able to check the box for "Use My Personal Meeting ID", with your ID appearing just below.
Once checked, hover over your ID to get a sub-menu and click the PMI Settings button.
Expand the Advanced Options and click the "Enable waiting room" option. You'll want to also "Enable join before host" if you wish for people to still join while you're participating in other meetings.
Finally, start your meeting and leave it running in the background periodically checking if anyone has joined.
